M.Sc. Plant Sciences
The Master of Science in Plant Sciences at the University of Bonn is a two-year research-oriented program taught entirely in English, with a strong focus on hands-on laboratory experience. The program prepares students for research-related careers in academia and industry through a combination of lectures, specialized seminars and practical training. At the same time, it offers a high degree of flexibility by keeping mandatory coursework to a minimum.

The program offers comprehensive training at the forefront of modern plant research. Students can customize their studies to explore a wide spectrum of topics, from plant physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to evolution, paleobotany, and ecology. The program emphasizes hands-on work in wet and dry lab, interactive seminars, and research-driven projects, providing students with the skills and experience to excel in fundamental plant science. Open to both domestic and international students, it welcomes applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences or related fields. The academic year begins in October, and applications are accepted until 1st May of the year of enrolment.
Program Structure
The M.Sc. Plant Sciences program has a standard duration of four semesters, each divided into a lecture period and a lecture-free period. The lecture period is structured into three time frames, offering different options of elective modules depending on whether it is the winter or summer term. Lectures (LEC) are mandatory modules that run throughout the entire lecture period, with examinations taking place at the beginning of the lecture-free period. Laboratory modules (LAB) form the core of the program, providing hands-on research experience. They typically last four weeks with examinations at the end of each module. Seminars (SEM) are theoretical modules designed to develop your scientific presentation skills and conclude with an oral examination. They may extend over the full lecture period. Free choice modules (FREE) offer additional flexibility, allowing you to complete internal or external internships at any time during your studies and to earn credits outside the standard curriculum. The schematic overview above illustrates a possible structure of the program. While the four lecture modules in the first two semesters are mandatory, you can choose your laboratory, seminar, and free choice modules according to your interests.

A wide range of elective modules allows students to tailor the program to their interests. Opportunities for internships allow placements at various university faculties, other universities and research institutions like the Max Planck Institutes and Research Center Jülich.
No tuition fees
There are no tuition fees, only a small semester contribution (Sozialbeitrag), which includes the semester ticket (Deutschlandticket), for public transport throughout Germany. Students can also apply to work as laboratory assistants at the university.
