  • My Experience in the Program: One of the things I value most about this program is the extensive wet-lab experience; it is really allowing me to build a strong, practical skill set. I love how flexible the curriculum is—with only four mandatory courses, I’ve been able to choose from a wide range of electives to truly tailor the degree to my own interests. I’ve found that the mandatory classes are incredibly refreshing because they focus on up-to-date information. We go far beyond standard textbooks, diving into insights from recent scientific research and current materials.

  • My Personal Highlight: A huge plus has been the opportunity to work as a student assistant in the labs. Working alongside doctoral students and directly contributing to ongoing research has given me a real sense of what a career in science looks like.

  • Favorite part of the program: I really enjoyed the program’s flexibility, being able to choose courses based on my interests was a huge plus. I also appreciated the strong focus on practical work compared to the amount of traditional lectures.

  • Career Preparation: Of course, the wet-lab techniques and subsequent analyses were a major advantage for progressing into doctoral studies, and they were already highly beneficial during my Master’s thesis work. In addition, the seminars helped me prepare for scientific presentations and improved my ability to understand research papers in greater depth.

  • Advice for prospective students: Don’t be afraid to ask questions or participate in discussions. It not only helps you and your fellow students, but is also highly valued by lecturers.

  • Favorite part of the program: I was really fascinated by the program’s strong practical focus. Coming from India, where hands-on experience can be limited, I really valued the applied learning and well-structured modules. I personally enjoyed the PPCB lab course module offered by Prof Dörmann and his group at IMBIO.

  • Career Preparation: The wet lab techniques taught in the program are highly versatile and widely applicable. They prepared me to work confidently across fields, including my current role in cancer research, by building a strong foundation in practical and analytical skills.

  • Advice for prospective students: This program equips you with skills that go far beyond plant science. Stay curious and make the most of every opportunity. It will prepare you to succeed in diverse fields and open doors you never expected.

  • Favorite part of the program: I loved the lab modules like PMGL and PBB, where I actually got to do cloning and heterologous protein expression. Exploring lipidomics techniques at IMBIO, like HPLC and GC-FID, was also a highlight. The mix of lab work and seminars made the learning feel very practical and close to real research.

  • Career Preparation: This program is a solid bridge to a PhD. Beyond just the technical side, the focus on scientific writing and team-based lab projects was a game-changer. Giving regular presentations helped me find my voice in scientific communication. After my Master’s thesis in the Molecular Plant Physiology lab, I was able to step right into a PhD in the same lab, feeling fully ready to take on the challenges of molecular plant research.

  • Advice for prospective students: Use the internships and lab modules to explore both wet and dry lab paths. Take advantage of that flexibility to find the lab for your Master's thesis where you feel at home; you never know, it might end up being the perfect place for your doctoral studies! Good luck!

  • Favorite part of the program: My Master’s at the University of Bonn was unforgettable. From inspiring lab days with Prof. Ute Vothknecht to experiences at IZMB, IMBIO and INRES, every phase shaped me. I’m proud to be an alumna and now work in my dream field of agriculture. Grateful to all professors and program coordinator.

  • Advice for prospective students: To freshers: embrace every moment, stay curious, and don’t fear mistakes—your Master’s at the University of Bonn is a journey of growth. Connect with professors, ask questions, and enjoy; they will shape both your skills and your future in this field.

  • Organization: Institute of Plant Molecular Biology (CNRS-IBMP), Strasbourg (starting 07/2026). Currently on research visit at the University of Western Australia, Perth.
  • Favorite part of the program: I really appreciated the very international composition of students throughout the semesters. Further, the ability to specialize very flexibly—particularly through the "FREE" lab rotation modules—was one of the main reasons why I chose this program.
  • Career Preparation: The program provided me with a solid background in plant scientific topics and wet-lab techniques. This foundation has been essential for my postdoctoral research, including my current visit to the University of Western Australia and my upcoming position at CNRS-IBMP in Strasbourg.
  • Advice for prospective students: Look for and ask about the lab rotation modules! Remember that you aren’t limited to university labs; you can also complete these rotations at a company or a non-university research institute.
  • Favorite part of the program: I mostly liked the program's flexible structure. I was able to focus on modules that were interesting to me, as for example phylogenetics and systematic botany. At the same time, I was acquiring knowledge in other disciplines of plant sciences.

  • Career Preparation: This master's program is mostly lab-oriented, and it definitely gives you various wet-lab skills. However, it also offers lab courses in which you learn data analysis, as well as multiple seminars in which you can develop your scientific communication skills. I loved that there was always constructive criticism during presentations and in written papers. This definitely prepared me for presenting at international conferences and publishing in international journals.

  • Advice for prospective students: I've seen so many different stories and career pathways of people who chose this study program. Some people ended up working to find cures for cancer and other diseases, while others work to sustain and protect our planet's biodiversity, like me.
