Insect diversity in Bonn:
Nesting mounds for wild bees aim to promote biodiversity and environmental education

Wild bees are essential for the pollination of many plants and are vital for maintaining ecosystems and food production. However, their biodiversity has been declining for decades, and in cities, their habitats are threatened by soil sealing, intensive landscaping, and the loss of structurally diverse environments.

In our project in Bonn, funded by BION e.V., we are therefore creating artificial nesting mounds for ground-nesting wild bees. These provide urgently needed nesting sites — as around 75% of wild bee species in Germany nest in the ground — and help make their importance more visible. Starting in spring 2026, the mounds will be established in parks, cemeteries, and educational gardens. The goal is to promote biodiversity in Bonn, strengthen environmental education, and enhance urban spaces ecologically.

Sustainability Research Up Close

University of Bonn participates in the “Summer of Change” cultural festival

As part of the Summer of Change, Team N at the University of Bonn is organizing a series of Science Cafés on the topic of sustainability. Junior Professor Antonia Mayr will participate in the panel discussion on biodiversity.

In Science Cafés, citizens can engage in conversations with researchers over a cup of coffee and learn fascinating insights on the following topic

Biodiversity (July 9, 4 PM)

These Were the Sustainability Action Months 2024

Mighty May

A special highlight of "Mighty May" was the World Bee Day event, where students, under the guidance of our Jun Prof. Dr. Antonia Mayr, crafted nesting aids for bees. This hands-on activity provided valuable insights into wild bees and their crucial role in ecosystems, showcasing how sustainability and biodiversity can be actively supported on campus.
